HCDJLS DEDICATION

Fred L. Speck Jr. has been involved with livestock all his life. He grew up in Rocksprings, Texas on a ranch where his family raised Angora goats. He has been involved with HCDJLS for over thirty years as a director. His children showed pigs and Angora goats and his grandchildren show Angora goats. Fred showed in Kerrville in the 1960’s. In 1999 he became superintendent of the Angora goat show (a state wide show). He wanted to enhance the show by offering scholarships and added money to keep the show strong. Today it is the largest youth Angora goat show in the world and gives more scholarship money than the other major shows including San Antonio. The show offers added money that covers the entry fee for eighty percent of all entries and two $10,000 scholarships per year are given. Fundraising is never easy and Fred is grateful to all the individuals that support the show. Mentoring 4-H kids is also a joy to Fred. For over thirty years he has coached wool and mohair judging teams, teaming earlier with Eddie Holland and now with Roy Walston. He believes the youth involved in the stock show and 4-H and FFA activities are learning important skills that will make them future leaders. He is blessed to be a part of that involvement.
